Norwegian Creates New Onboard Cruise Job
In June 2020, Travel Weekly reported about Norwegian Cruise Line’s new health protocols, which included creating the new onboard position of PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICER. Norwegian Cruise Line was the first major cruise line to offer specific details about health and safety protocols that will be implemented once cruising resumes.
Norwegian Cruise Line is operated by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE: NCLH) which also operates Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises brands. Norwegian Cruise Line currently operates 17 cruise ships with another six on order to be delivered between 2022 and 2027. They will have a Public Health Officer onboard each of their vessels.
Duties of Public Health Officer on a Cruise Ship
The role of the Public Health Officer (PHO) is essential in the process of maintaining health and safety standards. The Public Health Officer’s primary function is the training, oversight, implementation, and verification of compliance as it relates to Public Health and Safety procedures and application. This includes directing and controlling prevention programs, routine health, hygiene and sanitation verification inspections.
The Public Health Officer will be responsible in assessing the effectiveness of risk reduction actions and interventions. This individual will also prepare weekly health reports which include problem explanations, analyses, alternate solutions, and suggestions for improvement. Identifying and investigating health issues and health hazards is also part of the position along with implementing the company Outbreak Prevention and Response Program (OPRP). Additionally, the PHO will be responsible for conducting epidemiological research of acute and chronic diseases.
This new position of Public Health Officer will work closely with the Chief Engineer, Staff Captain, Senior Doctor, General Manager and other responsible Officers to ensure that all public health policies and procedures are implemented, and related documentation are accurately maintained. In addition, the Public Health Officer will educate guest and crew about health issues and empower them to aid in the prevention of spreading diseases.
Qualifications to be a Cruise Ship Public Health Officer
- Master or Bachelor in Public Health
- Knowledge of public health regulations and international laws
- Minimum of five years job experience in Public Health or Human Health Sciences Management is preferred
- Knowledge of potable water systems
- Understanding of Integrated Pest Management
- Epidemiological research, investigations
- Managerial skills
