History of Crystal Cruises
Crystal Cruises has been around since 1988 when they were owned by Japanese parent company, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Cruises). Crystal Cruises was acquired by Genting Hong Kong in May 2015. Genting also owns Star Cruises and Dream Cruises. At the time of the acquisition, it was announced that Crystal Cruises would expand into river cruising, yachts, and luxury jet travel.
In December 2015, Crystal Cruises acquired a 12-seat luxury jet intended for charter jet service for their guests. It went into service May 2016. In 2017, they customized a Boeing 787 into a luxury 88-seat aircraft. Both were sold in 2021.
In February 2016, the 31-suite passenger luxury yacht, Crystal Esprit entered service, complete with two-person submarine, 10-person Zodiacs, a 12-person tender, and toys that include water skis, wake boards, kayaks, jet skis, and scuba equipment. This yacht was sold to Lindblad Expeditions in 2021.
In February 2016, the company announced their intention to purchase and rebuild the 1950s-era SS United States into a modern-day 400-guest luxury cruise ship. Unfortunately, in August 2016, Crystal Cruises announced that they wouldn’t proceed with the proposed renovation claiming it would not be “technically or commercially responsible” to go any further with the project.
Crystal Cruises expansion into European river cruising began in July 2016 with their first river cruise ship, the Mozart (formerly operated by Peter Deilmann and YUI Cruises). This ship was transferred back to the parent company, Genting in 2019, but will recommence service for Crystal in 2022. In the summer of 2017, Crystal debuted two river cruise vessels, Crystal Bach and Crystal Mahler. And, then in 2018 they launched another two river cruise vessels, Crystal Ravel and Crystal Debussy.
