Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten operates a fleet of ships that offer Norwegian coastal cruises, expedition cruises as well as a ferry service. Since 1893, the Hurtigruten ships have carried international tourists, cargo and local passengers along the Norwegian coast. In 1993, a new era began with the modernisation of Hurtigruten’s fleet resulting in 10 new ships being added to the fleet by the end of 2007. In 2014, TDR, a British private equity firm acquired Hurtigruten and since then, they have provided the capital to refurbish existing ships as well as acquire and new ships.
In 2019, Hurtigruten added the Roald Amundsen to their fleet, a modern, hybrid-electric expedition cruise ship that carries 530 passengers and 150 crew. In 2020, the Fridtjof Nansen was completed, but it has yet to carry any passengers due to the COVID pandemic. In October 2020, Hurtigruten announced that they would separate its expedition operations from its domestic operations under a new reorganization.
Hurtigruten Expeditions operates seven small expedition ships and Norwegian Coastal Express has eight ships on the Norwegian coastal routes. In June 2021, Hurtigruten inked a deal with Metropolitan Touring to charter their expedition ship, Santa Cruz II. Hurtigruten will start bringing guests to the Galapagos on her in January 2022.
