American Cruise Lines was originally formed in 1974 but it went bankrupt near the end of the 1980s, at which time the ships were sold off. In 2000, the original owner, Charles Robertson, revived the company. Today the headquarters are located in Guilford, CT.
They have a fleet of modern riverboats, paddle-wheelers and coastal ships which cruise the Mississippi River, New England, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. All 13 of their vessels are American built, American flagged, and carry between 90 and 200 guests. Their ships are crewed by only Americans.
Servers, housekeepers, deckhands, and dishwashers can work up to 28 weeks. Managers and officers work a schedule of several weeks on, several weeks off, with longer shifts shipboard during the busy season (summer and fall).
