Ponant operates fleet of 13 small capacity vessels that offer worldwide itineraries that include Antarctica, the Arctic, and Africa. Their vessels are registered in France and they employ 1,500 crewmembers. Ponant is the only French cruise line and is a world leader in luxury expeditions.
History of Ponant
Starting out in 1991 with only one ship, Le Ponant, the company today now operates four additional and identical luxury sister ships.
In 2015, Artemis, a holding company controlled by France’s Pinault family acquired Ponant. And, in March 2016, Ponant signed a letter of intent to build four expedition vessels with 1C ice class certification. Their new Explorer-class ships were named after French explorers.
In 2019, Paul Gaugin Cruises was purchased by Ponant which in turn entered a contract with a shipyard to build two new vessels to be delivered in 2022. In 2020, Paul Gaugin underwent a refurbishment and returned to service in late 2021.
