Privately owned Star Clippers operates three of the world’s largest and tallest sailing vessels. The tall ships are modelled after 19th century sailing ships but have the atmosphere of a private yacht. The ships currently sail throughout the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Mediterranean, Thailand, and Indonesia. Learn about Star Clippers and how to get a cruise ship job with them.

About Star Clippers

In 1989, Swedish entrepreneur Mikael Krafft turned his boyhood dream into a reality when he founded Star Clippers, the only modern-day cruise line dedicated to re-creating the golden age of the tall sailing ships while providing passengers with a mega-yacht experience.

Meticulously researched down to the last detail, Star Flyer and Star Clipper entered service in the 1990s as the tallest clipper ships ever built. These two sailing ships have a capacity of 170 passengers. Their main masts rise 226 feet and they have a maximum sailing speed of 17 knots.

In 2000, the twin sister-ships were joined by Royal Clipper, the line’s flagship and the first fully rigged square-rigger with five masts and a passenger capacity of 227. In 2015, Star Clippers ordered a new sailing ship to be built and completed in 2018. The contract was terminated between Star Clippers and the shipyard due to both sides claiming violations of the contract.

Therefore, Star Clippers did not take delivery of the vessel and the courts awarded Star Clippers 13 million Euros in damages. The vessel continues to be owned by Brodosplit, the Croatian shipyard. It has been chartered to Tradewind Voyages and renamed Golden Horizon, since May 2021.
