Hapag Lloyd Cruises is a premium cruise line offering worldwide itineraries that cater mostly to the German market. They operate five vessels on worldwide itineraries. They employ an international crew, but German and English are a requisite.
Facts About Hapag Lloyd Cruises
Their cruising history dates back to the late 1800s and today they operate four vessels. Two are ultra-luxurious cruise ships and two are expedition ships with ice ratings. Another expedition cruise ship is scheduled to debut in 2021. Their itineraries include Northern Europe, Mediterranean, Antarctica, Arctic, Caribbean, Alaska, and others. Although most of their cruises are marketed to Germans, their international voyages (English/German) on the EUROPA 2 and on the HANSEATIC inspiration are conducted in English and German.
Hapag-Lloyd AG was formed in 1970 as a merger between Hapag (Hamburg America Line), which dated from 1847, and Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) established in 1856. One of the first cruises in history was on Hapag’s steamship, Augusta Victoria in 1891. In an era of transatlantic travel, the ship was not being used during the winter months, so a 57-day pleasure cruise was sold to 241 passengers.
The cruise to the “Orient” sailed from Cuxhaven, Germany and visited 14 ports including Southampton, Gibraltar, Genoa, Alexandria, Jaffa, Beirut, Constantinople (Istanbul), Piraeus, Malta, Palermo, Naples, and Lisbon. Following the success of that first voyage, Hapag (Hamburg America Line) adopted cruising as part of its business model.
Hapag-Lloyd was acquired in 1998 by TUI AG (Hanover). After the merger, Hapag-Lloyd AG discontinued its transatlantic passenger service. However, in 1981 the line returned to cruising with the launch of Europa, a ship that set the standard for luxury and service in the German market. In October 2008, TUI AG sold the majority of their shares of Hapag-Lloyd to the Albert Ballin consortium consisting of the City of Hamburg and a group of private investors.
In February 2020, TUI Group agreed to sell its Hapag Lloyd Cruises business to TUI Cruises (a joint venture that the company operates with Royal Caribbean Group). The sale was complete in July 2020.
