Pullmantur was a leader in the Spanish cruise market. They had four mid-sized cruise ships that offered authentic Latin experiences to Spanish-speaking guests on a variety of itineraries. In 2020, as a result of insolvency, Pullmantur’s cruise ships were sold, beached, and scrapped.
Based in Madrid, Pullmantur began its operations in the 1990s as a tour company selling cruises. Pullmantur acquired their own ship in 2000, starting their own cruise line. For the next six years, Pullmantur acquired ships from other companies. In 2006, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL) purchased Pullmantur and following the acquisition, RCCL transferred ships between the RCCL brands.
In 2016 Royal Caribbean Cruises formed a joint venture with Madrid-based private equity firm Springwater Capital by selling 51% stake in Pullmantur and CDF to Springwater. RCCL still retained full ownership of the ships and provided marine operations services.
When CDF ceased operations in early 2017, their two ships, Zenith and Horizon were transferred to the Pullmantur fleet. The other two ships in the Pullmantur fleet were Sovereign and Monarch.
In early June 2020, Pullmantur’s fleet moved into cold layup due to the company’s suspension of operations. Later that month Pullmantur’s owners filed for reorganization and in December 2020, Pullmantur was declared bankrupt. Their ships were sold, beached and scrapped.
