Mario Ferreira originally formed the company in 1993 as Ferreira & Rayford Turismo with the boat Vista Douro. The company was later named DouroAzul in 1996 when they acquired the vessels, Princesa do Douro and AltoDouro. Today the brand is operated under the Mystic Invest Holding umbrella with Mario Ferreira still at the helm as CEO.
DouroAzul grew quickly, launching six ships between 1999 and 2004. Starting in 2011, DuoroAzul began serving the Duoro River market as a shipbuilder and supplier to Uniworld, Viking River Cruises, and AMA Waterways.
Currently, DouroAzul owns 13 river cruise vessels, yachts and tourist boats. They also occasionally charter out their vessels to other cruise operators including AMA Waterways.
