Appealing to an older demographic, Saga Cruises has evolved from selling holiday packages to owning their own cruise ships. In 2021, they will be introducing two ocean-going cruise ships and a new river cruise vessel.
Facts About Saga Cruises
Saga Holidays has been around since 1951, selling tours and packages within the UK to a predominantly over 50, retired, and mostly British customer. In 1996, Saga Holidays purchased their first cruise ship, an ex-Cunard vessel, although their first experience selling a world cruise was actually in the 1980s. Their cruise itineraries visit the British Isles, Ireland, Norway, Scandinavia, Mediterranean, the Canaries, and more.
Over the years they have always operated ships that were previously owned by other cruise lines, but 2021 they will only own and operate new ships. In 2019 and 2020, they sold their Saga Pearl II and Saga Sapphire respectively. In June 2021, Spirit of Discovery will debut and in May 2021, Spirit of Adventure will offer her maiden voyage as well.
On January 20, 2021, Saga announced that they had made the decision to introduce the requirement that all guests must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 14 days before sailing with them. This is a first for the cruise industry.
